Inspiration Saturdays: A single man
Inspiration often comes out of nowhere. Paul Smith even wrote and bound a release entitled 'You can find inspiration in everything, (and if you can't, look again')So in looking at things differently I went into 'A single man' without any idea of what to expect. All I knew was that Tom Ford, the visionary, was directing his adaptation of the 1964 novel by Christopher Isherwood.His version, as if a surprise to anyone is much classier and updated with rich cinematography and the most elegant details down to the gold lighter used. In the novel George lived in a very different and far less glamorous way. I'm sure the original George wasn't dressed head to toe in chic Tom Ford suiting... but it's certainly more pleasing to the eye for Fords huge fashionisto following.

Mad Hatter Scarf by Paul Smith
It makes sense-- Paul Smith being the 'out of the box' designer that he is, and Johnny Depp being the... well the way 'out of the box' actor that he is.Depp stars in the highly anticipated 'ALICE IN WONDERLAND' featuring an incredible cast which includes Anne Hathaway and Helena Bonham Carter. Last night I went to watch 'Dear John'. And FYI I got popcorn salt in my eyes, they weren't tears, okay! Anyway during the preview I noticed a scarf worn by the Mad Hatter. I had a feeling it was Paul Smith and later investigated. It is infact Paul Smith, from his Ladies 'Black Label' collection which is available at my wardrobe here in both black and pink!
PART 3 - Robert Downey Jr's style
Hero comes in a new shade! He's quirky yet handsome and seems to fall into all the wrong places in comical scenarios of every kind. So as the borders are stretched on what kind of actors we place in action movies it comes as no surprise that Robert Downey Jr is still a valid member of modern cinema. His style is non-conformity. Or rather classic with a twist. A t-shirt under a blazer, quirky glasses and his goatee (interesting how all three Top Billing candidates have goatee's?), even double-breasted suits with high-top sneakers.His sunglass choices are even posted online for you to buy for yourself. So if you want to duplicate the Robert Downey Jr. style, then get the following:1) Cartoon tee's to wear under a fitted blazer with jeans2) Purple tinted sunglasses3) A mustache or goatee4) Cardigans/shirts and fun striped ties5) Neckerchiefs5) Sherlock Holmes attire with top hat and cane!
PART 2 - Leonardo DiCaprio's style
I wouldn't exaclty call Leonardo DiCaprio, trendy. But what he manages to exude, wether owed to a stylist or not is style and attitude. He is quite simple in his dress sense and I think that's what works. However when it gets to his casual wear it leaves a little to the imagination. With his baseball caps that never seem to leave his head except for premieres, Leo (according to a specific study of all the many photo's taken of him) wears a different cap to every baseball game he attends. With the red carpet, Leo keeps it classic! And barely ever moves far from his black and white standard. Slick back hair and a 5 o' clock goatee is all you need. Featuring the fantastic vocal stylings of P!NK, Jennifer Hudson, Wyclef Jean and even a little Miley Cyrus.The track is similar to it's former version except that 2010 has added a wall of rappers including Lil' Wayne and Kanye West. It sounds better than I expected!The track is available on iTunes and proceeds will go to Haiti relief!While watching it I couldn't help but notice a tartan shirt that I immediately loved. Kanye West and his Rayban Wayfarers (it must have been bright inside)graced the re-recording of We are the world. It's a gold embellished Studded Givenchy shirt from the 2010 spring collection. CFDA joined GQ once again for a showcase of FALL 2010 looks from six finalists. The event, held at the Gehry-designed IAC building offered a rotating cast of models that gave the party-goers close-up views of styles from Burkman Bros., Richard Chai, Caulfield Preparatory, J.Crew, Billy Reid and Unis. And who made up the panel of judges? Although we will never really know what goes on behind the closed doors of a celebrity home, the paparazzi will somehow manage to photograph the one scene that will catapult a 100 magazine covers. And for whatever bizarre reason those abhorrent "publications" will get it right every so often. Case and point: Guy Ritchie and Madonna.But on the lighter side of invasive "journalism" they also come up with harmless fodder for us! Like when it was reported that Marc Jacobs had wed his fiancé Lorenzo Martone while vacationing in St. Barts. It was rumored, but denied by reps. The world tragically lost another one of it's special gems. Alexander McQueen as I'm sure you've already heard died today from what the BBC is claiming Suicide. And to think the talented British designer was at the very peak of his career. What will this mean to his huge company? Marc Buckner's career is on the rise and rise. Not only has the local Boss Model graced the cover of Mens Health more than once he even became the face of Canal Walk. He took a minute to sit and answer a few questions for me today and this is what went down:You are showing up all over the place these days, Marc. Did you ever plan to be a model?I never planned on much in my life but started at 17 because a friend dragged me to a school fashion show where we had to do rehearsals... I immediately pulled out but slowly got convinced into going to an agency by a scout.Where are your favorite destinations? I imagine modeling has taken you all over the world!I loved all the big cities like New York and London in the beginning but soon realised that due to my lifestyle I am drawn to places like Thailand and many of our African islands. ( Asia is by far the worst place as u work your ass off but the payoff of all the interesting cultures is way worth the hard work ). I leave for Thailand in April to buy a house.List your three essential items when traveling for work/pleasure.My favorite Thai style shorts, a vest and some fruit. I really take nothing with me when I travel...even for work, then it would be a pair of long pants and a smart shirt but nothing enters my backpack until I have laned at my destination.What has modeling taught you about fashion?That like anything else in life it is an expression of self and only what you make of it. I have worn so many labels that I cant even spell but have gravitated toward keeping it simple and functional.What was your favorite shoot so far in your career?Tough one. It would have to be a combo of good people and great location. A shoot on the isle of Scilly outside the U.K. We took a train, then a helicopter, then a boat and finally a landy up the mountain to our destination. I was for Moët & Chandon. Everyone on that shoot was amazing.Who is your favorite designer?I know no designers... myself and the many unknown people who put pieces together just for the love of it.If you were handed a blank cheque what would you buy and why?Whoever deserves it would get enough money to get out of the rat race and enjoy life. I leave for Thailand to buy my mom a house in our favorite place. I suppose I am already doing that.What kind of hobbies keep you busy when you're not in front of the camera?Every day that I am not casting or shooting I am on the mountain or in the ocean , yesterday I was in Tokai forest mountain biking and the day before I was up table mountain bouldering. Thats my life and the reason I do this job... so I have time to do that.Where do you see 'Marc Buckner' five years from now? Not much different from now only a little wiser, a little more fit and a lot happier, I want to go forward as we all do but consistently and slowly. I would love to have visited many new places and to have gone back to many old. I have made friends all over the world and I would love to see them all again. I leave again for New York in a few months and I would love to have made it big there by then just to fill the other side of the spectrum.To strip that winter weight off what do you recommend?Diet, health, sport-- but something you love....if you have no sport you love then find one, preferably something outdoors. It will make you a better person. Vivienne Westwood MAN 2010 campaign
Keeping it in the family, Vivienne Westwood's latest campaign features her husband Andreas Kronthaler and Pamela Anderson once more. In addition Select model Tati features alongside the usual trio. It was Juergen Teller who photographed the somewhat trashy shoot but Westwood is a true artist and the campaign is nothing short of dirty-fabulous. Andreas, never shy to prove an equal to his wifes eccentricities recently had this to say:

Craig Port | Audi Joburg Fashion Week
Although I am a little late on reporting this I definitely still wanted to show you. Craig Port surprised me this year. Like, really surprised me. Featuring a flurry of handsome Craig Port look-a-likes wearing well structured suiting in purple and enlarged plaid. I honestly enjoyed these images more than when I saw Paul Smith's show. Because I wasn't expecting it, and because it's really different to what any South African designer is coming up with.Not only is the use of plaid suiting on-par with International designs, but the use of purple as you know was all over Fashion week in Paris and Milan. I particularly loved the dipped jacket at the top. I have a pair of off-white jeans I don't wear too often and I have been thinking of doing something like that. The purple paisley in the middle is gorgeous. It actually looks like one of D&G's from their last collection. Inspiring!I wonder if he will be bringing these and other designs to Cape Town Fashion week?
