VMAN >> Walk it off - In Copenhagen

Photobucket

Copenhagen was a flutter with models, photographers and generally more important folk than ourselves, where VMAN partnered up with Copenhagen Fashion Week to celebrate the launch of VMAN18: A Scandinavian Summer. Catch the gallery here.

"Tuesday night we partnered up with Copenhagen Fashion Week to celebrate the launch of VMAN 18: A Scandinavian Summer. It was a major bash uptown at Good Units, the new venue on the lower level of the Hudson Hotel, with a lot of Belvedere Vodka to drink. Harking back to the way they did it in ‘80s and early ‘90s New York, a fashion show appeared out of nowhere smack in the middle of the party. Fashion from our favorite Scandinavians including Bjørg Jewellery, Bruuns Bazaar, Cheap Monday, David Andersen for Kopenhagen Studio, Day Birger et Mikkelsen, Georg Jensen, Henrik Vibskov, Hummel, Moonspoon Saloon, Oscar Magnuson, Shamballa Jewels, Soulland, Stærk, Stine Goya, Tiger of Sweden, and Vilsbøl de Arce paraded down the runway.

Photobucket

Through a little fancy lighting slight of hand, each model was transformed into another half way across the runway. The slim Michael W became the buff Brad Kroenig; Julia Hafstrom became Maggie Rizer; Georgina became Sessilee; Aiden became Rainer; Lady Fag became Daphne; and so on. Then to a roar of applause, the show closed with Anna Cleveland transforming into her legendary mother Pat Cleveland.

Accompanying the whole thing, the amazing disco’d-up gospel singer Cookie sang her hit anthem “Lola’s Theme.” After the show wrapped, the Scandis and a bunch of models moshed to a high energy performance by Danish rockers New Politics. Rumor has it that after the party, most of the Danish designers then decamped to the box for a long night of further celebration. But that’s just rumor."

Marc Jacobs quilted high-tops

Photobucket

Following a legion of design houses releasing high-top sneakers (Vuitton and Gucci just to name two) Marc Jacobs has released his own version. I think out of all that I've seen these are the nicest and most understated. Certainly a pair that would look great however you wore it. The neon straps from Vuitton, however nice are limiting.

Photobucket

In fact, Marc Jacobs has a history with the quilted effect as it carries into his menswear from the very popular quilted bags he designs for ladies-wear. The burgandy/blood red high tops were available last year for $600 but I imagine like those, the new ones will sell out fast too. They are however just a preview so keep your eyes peeled for a release date.

Converse Designer Partnerships

All-American shoe staple 'Converse' have teamed up with a variety of designers to come up with a classic shoe with a designer twist. These are just some of the looks but I expect many more to follow. Paul Smith in a stripe would be nice!

Who would you like to see design a pair of Chuck Taylors?

Brad Goreski by Terry Richardson

Photobucket

I am a huge fan of Brad Goreski. Having said that I haven't watched more than an episode of his show with Rachel Zoe. His style is fantastic and consistent. I like the bow-tie and glasses theme he keeps. Also I love the fact that he carries a folio or briefcase to formal events. He's one to watch for sure!

Photobucket

He was just shot by the famous Terry Richardson who also likes to appear alongside his subjects. His blog Terry's Diary is FANTASTIC and keeps me there for hours.

Photobucket

And of course if you have not already seen what it is he does, then take a gander at the following clip from Season 2 "The Rachel Zoe project"

Make-up for the Modern Man!

Gentleman, you didn’t read wrong. Surely the thought of a man wearing make-up is absurb for some, but I’ll have you know not only is it’s popularity on the increase but it can be your little secret, too. In my Stylescoop article this week I discuss make-up for the man and how to execute it in a natural way, having you look like a Greek God in minutes.

Paint trend for 2010: You should paint my Love

Photobucket

When Fashion tells you to add a splash of colour, be mindful of how much. Appearing all over Summer 2010 in not only menswear by ladieswear too, one of the newer trends is paint. Used by designers, Thakoon, Alexander McQueen and BCBG to name just three, this paint theme is really making a splash!

Photobucket

Photobucket

Using paint in fashion has even made it's way to print campaigns such as Lanvin, and editorials like the one below in FHM with the black dipped hands. It goes to show that even a novice Fashionisto could take out a paint bucket and spruce up and old pair of jeans. But do so, cautiously.

Don't be surprised that a trend like this lands up in VOGUE HOMME, But on your underpants too? Well that's Fashion for you.

STIAAN LOUW DOCUMENTARY: Brand vs. Persona

I just got this video teaser in and wanted to share it with you straight away! In a new 12 minute documentary Stiaan Louw is followed around during the recent build-up to 2010 Design Indaba. Not only will you be introduced to the process of building a line, but you will also discover the artist behind the name.

The documentary director, Kyle Lewis had this to say of Stiaan :

"I believe that the world of fashion; design and film all co-inside. And as a fashion lover myself I wanted to shed light on how crazy the fashion world is but also how rewarding it can be.

Stiaan Louw is one of the most revolutionary South African designers, taking his brand to the fore front of international fashion.

But even with all his success he has managed to remain a humble down to earth person, who is driven by his passion to create and inspire. I believe it’s important to expose people to Stiaan’s world, because he is the perfect example of a success story.

I wanted to show the man behind the name."

BANG by Marc Jacobs

Marc Jacobs, appearing in his own campaign for the first time for the new fragrance BANG, which will be available from July 30th. The campaign is a bit reminiscent of Tom Ford though...no? Shot by MJ regular, Juergen Teller.

Ryan Gosling in Burberry

Featuring an array of who's-who's in Cannes this year, Ryan Gosling walked the Red Carpet with co-star Michelle Williams. Of course unlike most premieres, BLUE VALENTINE was set against the backdrop of yachts and indulgence in Palais Stephanie. It's no wonder that the mighty talented Gosling, 29, dressed in a perfectly tailored Burberry suit ended up taking off his bow-tie, and still looking like a million bucks, scoring major Man of the Cloth points!

HOW TO BUY JEANS, FOR MEN >>

Noah Mills for BREIL

I personally always wanted to be a male model. All that traveling, the access and opportunities, the clothing... But alas I just don't have the jaw structure. Noah Mills on the other hand, does. His career is doing mighty, mighty well right now having landed jobs for Tom Ford and D&G's new fragrance collection this past year. In addition to these he is now the face of Breil and will feature alongside Kim Cattrall in the hugely anticipated Sex and the City sequel. Some guys just have it all...

Robert Downey Jr. and his Gucci

There is no shortage of designer gear in Robert Downey Jr.'s closet. Spotted outside Gucci in New York City matching his shoes with not only his suit but his wife too. Lavender coordination and plum spectacles! This is why we Love RDJ.

Photobucket

At the premiere of his new movie 'IRON MAN 2' RDJ was decked out in his usual style, this time HEAD-TO-TOE Lanvin. I would love to take a look into his wardrobe. The colour lenses add such a special touch. Alber Elbaz must be proud!

GIVENCHY 2010 CAMPAIGN

Set under the same theme as their last campaign, Givenchy for Fall 2010 invite top model Simon Nessman to return amongst a mix of new and old faces.

Sprinkled with homosexual undertones and their fantastic fitted fleece tuxedo shirts, the campaign is certainly a success. Grouping the men together in the same uniform proves to be simple and effective.

This brand is fast becoming a new favorite of mine.

Finger in the nose

Photobucket

Stylish parents don't have to worry about kitting out their kids in cool clothes anymore. Sure, there are designer baby/kid stores available in major cities but for the average spender a fantastic label is now open online. Perfectly named: FINGER IN THE NOSE, they specialize in denim, quality gear and even leather goods. I want a kid just so I can make them look this cool.

David Gandy proves he isn't just another pretty boy

Photobucket

The male supermodel found himself in Oxford University's esteemed Union on Monday night as fashion had a brainy moment. Gandy was joined on a panel by photographer Tony McGee, the V&A's senior curator Claire Wilcox, fashion consultant Frances Card and VOGUE.COM editor Dolly Jones to chat to the students about how to make it in an industry not usually associated with the lofty intellectualism of Oxford.

While the students were happy to hear about each of the panellist's careers and to ask plenty of questions, there was no doubt that all eyes were on Gandy - fresh from an appearance on the Friday Night With Jonathan Ross show and looking as Dolce & Gabbana-gorgeous in real life as he does in his little white pants in the ads.

Admitting that it hadn't been easy to break into the industry when he started modelling "because the trend was for skinny, androgynous guys who had bodies more like girls", the very masculine Gandy had all the women giggling like schoolgirls throughout - and the boys joined in when he told a shocking story about finding himself in someone else's hotel bathroom during a recent shoot. (Caught short and in a desperate hurry, he mistook somebody else's beach hut for his own, only to walk out of the bathroom - refreshed - to find a surprised honeymoon couple wondering what he'd been doing in there).

As well as building his own profile into one to rival any of the super-girls ("I saw a gap in the market"), Gandy has also taken it upon himself to help men for whom fashion is still a mystery. "Men are still quite scared of the connotations of looking gay, even in 2010," he said. "But dressing well can be incredibly easy. You don't have to buy a suit from the most expensive labels - you can pick one up from the high street and for an extra £20 or £30 you could have it tailored to fit you perfectly - and nothing really looks better than a tailored suit. And because we're limited to jeans, T-shirts and suits, it's important to be confident with accessories to look good and be different - it doesn't have to be difficult."

While styling might be another of his talents, however, modelling is still first and foremost. "I've managed to just about cross the line from model to celebrity which puts me up against David Beckham and Jude Law when it comes to modelling jobs," he said. "It's an amazing feeling to be on that level - but on the other hand I do kind of just think, 'I wish they'd sod off - I want those campaigns!'"

From GQ Magazine, Gandy had this to say: "There's a bit of a Zoolanderesque presumption about about who you are. And in some ways I'm trying to break that trend... [Modelling is] opening up many doors." Come in David Gandy, your time is now.

Dolce and Gabbana hit the showers

Dolce and Gabba hit the showers recently with 5 Italian Footballs stars in Calcio inspired underwear and gym-wear line. Fashion photographer Mariano Vivanco joined them to shoot in the changing room showers. The collection includes tracksuits, jackets, vests, polo shirts, shorts, T-shirts and trousers even though they have yet to make an appearance.

The range is created in the blue and white of the Azzuri and features the Italian flag as well as the words 'Italia' and 'Calcio'. The 2010 World Cup commemorative underwear line 'Calcio' will be available from Mid-May. So for now ladies, feast your eyes on Antonio Di Natale, Vincenzo Iaquinta, Claudio Marchisio, Federico Marchetti and Domenico Criscito for Dolce and Gabbana.

Hear this: The Plastics

They may have been a somewhat-known Japanese band in the 80's but today 'The Plastics' are a new foursome based in Cape Town. Catch 'Tiny islands' by these talented boys in their retro-styled video on breaking free of the confines of your life. Let me know what you all think and catch their myspace page here for more music!

The costume institute gala 2010: MEN

Photobucket

A little bit of rain couldn't stop the elite A-list from attending the annual Met costume institute gala last night. While some of the looks were certainly celebrated above others (Katy Perry and your glow-stick dress we're talking to you) the overall night was a success.

A huge array of celebrities and their partners, including Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel, who wore Ralph Lauren were photographed on those famous steps of The Metropolitan Museum of Art.

My absolute favorite look was executed by three very dashing men; Usher Raymond, Tom Ford and Jimmy Fallon. The look?Powder, certainly the colour of the night!

AFRICAN FASHION INTERNATIONAL 2010

Photobucket

Mark it in your moleskin or Blackberry boys and girls... Come June 30th all eyes will be set on Johannesburg for the Fashion Event of the year. Well, one of them anyway. I wonder if it wouldn't be easier to have one big fashion week instead? I will try to go up and cover the mens shows, this year sounds like it could be a good one to watch. Will you be there? Or will you be watching that tiny little soccer thing that has barely caught any attention whatsoever?
